SCHOTT® reflective waveguides

Reflective waveguides offer outstanding optical performance in augmented reality (AR) devices and enable the seamless integration of digital content into the real world. As in all waveguides, confined light propagates via total internal reflection (TIR), but different from diffractive waveguides, in reflective waveguides the light is guided by (partially) reflective mirrors into the user’s eye.

Image quality

Reflective waveguides offer many degrees of freedom that competing solutions lack, positioning them as the obvious choice for consumer AR devices. With a clear display, the digital image is seamlessly overlayed onto the user’s view of the real world.

Field of View

Embedded, partially reflecting mirrors enable a wide field of view and a small, lightweight profile. Reflective waveguides use an array of partially reflective mirrors to guide light across, and out of the waveguide toward the user’s eyes.

SCHOTT x Lumus

Lumus, the pioneering innovator of reflective waveguide displays for AR devices, joined forces with SCHOTT in 2020. Within this cooperation, Lumus designs and develops its industry leading geometric waveguide technology, while SCHOTT ’s focus is on process development and manufacturing. Leveraging its international production network and controlling the entire manufacturing process, from the production of high-quality optical glass in Germany to substrate manufacturing and waveguide assembly in Asia, SCHOTT is able to scale production to meet the global demand.
