PYRAN® Platinum Fire-Rated Glass-Ceramics

Technical Details of PYRAN® Platinum Fire-Rated Glass-Ceramics

Architects rely on PYRAN® Platinum, its combination of heat resistance and esthetic value essential for modern building design. Developed for architectural applications, this glass-ceramic offers a smooth finish and colorless appearance, as well as the largest sheet size in the industry.

The strong, safe and attractive option

Fire protection

The fire-rated PYRAN® Platinum prevents the spread of fire, hot gases and smoke, remaining transparent under high thermal loads. Certified by Underwriters Laboratories, PYRAN® Platinum offers fire protection for up to 90 minutes in windows and 180 minutes in doors.

Largest sheet size

PYRAN® Platinum is unique in the architectural world in that it’s available in the largest sheet size in the industry – an impressive 51 x 99”. This opens up a vast range of possibilities in building design, offering the ability to create stunning installations while strictly adhering to fire regulations.

Smooth, clear and colorless

Produced using SCHOTT’s unique microfloat process, PYRAN® Platinum has a smooth, distortion-free mirror finish that results in pristine installations. The material is also clear and colorless, without the amber tint associated with competitors’ fire-rated glass-ceramics.

Available from stock

To help meet the tough demands of project lead times, PYRAN® Platinum is available in most local markets through a distributor. Lead times can be drastically reduced by PYRAN® Platinum’s ability to be cut from stock whenever you need it.

General information

Labeling

After cutting, each panel of PYRAN® Platinum fire-rated glass-ceramic should be permanently labeled according to local building code requirements with product and manufacturer’s name, UL certification mark, fire rating, etc.

Storage and handling

PYRAN® Platinum fire-rated glass-ceramic should be handled with care during transportation, storage, inspection, and installation. It should be stored in dry conditions and needs to be stacked upright or at a slight angle. In addition, the panels must be separated by an appropriate material, such as soft pads made of cork, while the bottom edge must be supported along its entire length.

Installation

PYRAN® Platinum should only be installed into fire-rated frame and window assemblies carrying the same rating. Each PYRAN® Platinum panel should be inspected carefully before installation, and any pieces with visible edge or surface damage should be rejected. All glazing components and the stop height must be chosen according to the PYRAN® Platinum UL classification. The panel must be placed on calcium silicate or hardwood setting blocks and glazed using PYRAN® Platinum classified glazing tape, such as closed cell PVC, Fiberfrax tape or Pemko FG3000S90. The installation of the framed unit must comply with the frame supplier's instructions.

PYRAN® Platinum is a specially developed glass-ceramic that fulfills the fire protection rating requirements. The production process may create certain optical imperfections such as bubbles or knots. Since these do not generally impair the transparency or the technical performance of the glass-ceramic, they do not represent cause for rejection or replacement.

Maintenance and care

To maintain the esthetics, it is important to keep the panel clean. A soft, clean, non-abrasive cloth and a mild soap, detergent, or non-abrasive window cleaning solution is suitable for cleaning. After cleaning, rinse immediately with clean water and remove any excess water from the panel surface. Also, do not allow any metal or hard parts of the cleaning equipment to come into contact with the panel surface.

Tests

Fire Endurance test

The Fire Endurance test subjects a full-size window or door assembly to a controlled time-temperature profile in a furnace. The test duration is between 20 minutes and three hours depending on the desired rating, with temperatures reaching nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit in three hours. The window assembly, including frame, glazing and components, must not allow flames on the non-fire side, and the glazing must survive the test without breaking or cracking.

Applicable for SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum, SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum F, and SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum L.

Hose stream test

Immediately following the Fire Endurance test, the fire-exposed side of the test assembly is subject to impact from water blast in a prescribed pattern for a duration appropriate to the specimen size. The glazing must remain intact in the frame.

Applicable for SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum, SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum F, and SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum L.

Impact test

In installations where accidental human impact could occur, fire-rated glazing must also withstand impact tests. The impact test uses a 100 lb weight swung from a pendulum at a 48-inch drop height. The glazing must remain intact with no significant openings.

Applicable for SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum F, and SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum L.
