Feedthroughs for Airbags and Seatbelts

Applications of Feedthroughs for Airbags and Seatbelts

Improved fatality figures on our roads can partially be attributed to superior innovation in automotive safety technology. SCHOTT’s feedthroughs support the reliable, long-term functionality of airbag ignitors, seatbelt pretensioners and safety shutdown systems.

Seatbelt pretensioners

Ever since seatbelt pretensioners were invented, SCHOTT Feedthroughs have been used to protect the explosive charge and enable the flow of crucial electrical signals that activate the retraction mechanism in the event of a vehicle accident.

Airbags

Milliseconds after the seatbelt pretensioner is activated, the airbag is activated through an ignitor, which needs to ensure that the gas generator quickly delivers large amounts of gas into the airbag. SCHOTT headers and feedthroughs protect the sensitive pyrotechnic ignitor charge so that it can do its job reliably in the event of an emergency.

The circuit breaker is used to secure electrical separation in the event of a crash to protect passengers and first responders from injuries caused by electrical current. Separation is done pyrotechnically.
